The Black Angels
Although the band have been on the scene since 2006, and their repertoire spans 3 albums plus 4 EP’s, it’s fair to say that The Black Angels still seem to remain somewhat under the radar.
Perhaps it’s because their genre, which is described as “Psychedelic Rock”, is not exactly your mainstream style. However, you shouldn’t be put off by thinking their sound is totally off the wall; it’s not. They combine quite an epic percussion sound (really big and spacey – think Rolling Stones “Paint It Black”) with mellow, gravelly vocals – the result is a very listenable rock track.
The band hails from Austin, Texas and got their name from the track “The Black Angel’s Death Song” by the Velvet Underground.
In September they released their new EP “Phosgene Nightmare”, which follows trend of the previous releases and is every bit as good. My favourite track is “Melanie’s Melody”, and if there are any Shins fans reading this, have a listen to “Choose To Choose” (I think this track has a similar sound to the Shins).
From the other albums, definitely listen to “Young Men Dead” (for any Snowboarding fans you may have heard this in the new Red Bull film “the Art Of Flight”).
