Big Scary

Big Scary

It’s always a challenge finding the right present for someone who seemingly has everything. It’s almost so frustrating that you feel like deliberately getting them something rubbish, just to spite them for the numerous hours you have spent scanning the shelves of your local department store for their gift. The solution to that problem is Big Scary.

Melbourne duo Tom Iansek and Jo Syme have recently released their debut album ‘Vacation’, a collection of expertly crafted songs capable of pleasing even the most querulous music fans. The albums opening track and my favorite ‘Gladiator‘ is an indie-rock number with a real rawness and emotive tinge that makes me hit repeat again and again. As you progress through the album it moves into the contagious piano-driven pop single ‘Mix Tape.‘  By this stage you’re starting to wonder if these guys are those annoying friends everyone has that are naturally good at anything they try. The ones you like too much to be annoyed at.

‘We write songs with completely different feels and vibes,’ Iansek says. ‘In the studio, we thought that we should try not suppress this too much, and just roll with it.’

The rest of the album is a gorgeous collection of acoustic songs touching on life’s intricacies , that has just let me escape today’s mundane tasks and stare out my office window for the past hour. It really is an album for all.

The band has had an amazing year, picking up an Album of the Year nomination in the Triple J awards. They have supported some of the biggest names in the industry with The Grates, The Vasco Era, Florence and the Machine and Little Red to name a few. They have a number of upcoming gigs and a world tour on the horizon. If anything is going to make your Christmas merry this year, its Big Scary.
